CONSENT REHEARSALS <333

Dance is finally (!) busy with consent. As tool and discourse, consent is needed to mitigate bodily transgressions. But consent is more than a corrective posture. We risk ignoring the potentials of consent-as-method, if we reduce it to a verbal contract between two, or more, bodies engaging with touch. So, let’s not reduce but complexify it.

During this week, we will rehearse consent by listening through our skin to shared pleasure and (dis)comfort. We will employ consent as method to rehearse scores with pressure. Through touch-based warmups and a gradual engagement with my movement practice ‘body hiking’, we will build a shared language around embodied and limit consent.

Each class is pragmatic, soft and cute. We begin by warming up, opening our skin and rehearsing our haptic listening skills. Through partnerwork, I will introduce some simple scores for the manual negotiation of consent. The class is a rehearsal: We will fail and learn together through repetitions.

Consent is heart work <3

The classes are held at Dansehallerne, Franciska Clausens Plads 27 DK-1799 Copenhagen V in Studio 3.

Practice Development

In these practical sessions, you will engage with each other’s artistic processes, and also have focus time to explore your individual practice. As a participant you will be experimenting, researching, giving and receiving feedback in a supportive environment facilitated by Julie Schmidt Andreasen. Each session, of 2 hours, you are invited to suggest 10-30 minutes of practice, or just participate. There will be min. 2-3 practices pr day, to feed your curiosity and be in-process together. You choose your focus based on your current practice, body- mind state, and what is meaningful to you, at this moment.

This is a space for growing your choreographic concepts, movement ideas and dance material of any kind, with group participation and immediate response. As a facilitator I encourage an attentive and respectful attitude, structure the sessions each day, and lead a shared warm up and cool down. Moving is always part of a session, and you might not do your own practice every time.

You are free to participate on a daily basis, and we recommend as many days as possible.

Exploring sensory limbs…

Astrid Sweeney will guide you through a warm up, working with succession within the body through spirals, shaking, assymetry and shifting relations to gravity.

The session will then transition into movement explorations inspired by Astrid’s latest collaborative work, Ontogenesis Dreams. Drawing from science fiction literature, the molting processes of insects, and queer ecologies, participants will engage in creating non-human locomotions and reimagine the sensory hierarchy of the body. Through imaginative prompts, such as envisioning the head as a tail or the feet as eyes, we will experiment with hybrid forms and explore knotting techniques to construct hybrid, interconnected “bodies.”

Flying Low & Floorwork

During the classes we will practice elements that focus on our relationship with the floor. You can expect to work with sliding, rolling, running, challenge verticality and experiment with new movement patterns. Each class will start with a warm-up followed by floorwork elements, which will be integrated into dance phrases inspired by ‘flying low technique.’

You will explore how to combine qualities of softness and precision, while smoothly transitioning through the different levels (i.e. floor, mid-level, standing). By working with the principles of the technique one can discover how to use limitations as space to grow in. Once you become familiar with the patterns, we will explore working with different speeds, spatial directions, and add movement complexity, while introducing soft acrobatic elements to further challenge and expand your movement vocabulary. Additionally to the technical work, we will keep our joy of moving and dancing together!

It is recommended to wear long pants & a sleeved shirt for protecting the skin when sliding / working with the floor.

GYROKINESIS ®

In this Gyrokinesis® class, you can expect to explore a unique movement system that combines fluid, spiral, and circular movements to enhance mobility, strength, and flexibility. Developed as part of the Gyrotonic® Expansion System, it engages the body in a way that supports natural movement patterns, helping to release tension and improve overall coordination.

The class begins seated on a chair, where you will activate key areas of the body, before transitioning to the floor and standing. Each class follows a set of specific exercises designed to stimulate the joints, mobilize the spine, and strengthen the core. This method provides dancers with tools to optimize movement efficiency, deepen body awareness, and prevent injury, making it an excellent complement to any dance practice.

Housedance

This week’s class will begin with a great focus on Footwork Technique which is fundamental to the dance language of House dance. Coordination and variations of steps closely connected to rhythm-work, weight management and groove is practiced through repetition with the purpose of moving from mind to body memory.

The participants are introduced to methods for practising the technique, so that the final intention of Freestyling/improvising can be explored during the last 2 days of the week.  Dancers new to the style will need to be present for the first part of the week to benefit from the final days of classes. Dancers already familiar with House dance vocabulary may join from mid week on.

We will be working with a 360 degree awareness as House is commonly practiced in a Cypher. Participants will be challenged to apply direction, level changes (including light floor work), use of space, rhythm- and tempo variations. The final two days of the week, we will focus on the exchange with the other participants. The freedom of expression (of music and emotions) is the joy we reach for through exploring House as a social dance and a conversation between the participants.

Be willing to sweat and bring sneakers/running shoes.

TOUCH, LISTEN, DANCE

This class is an invitation to move and be moved, to listen and to share the dances that emerge.

Each day will begin with a warm-up focusing on grounding, centering, breathing, and building heat. The warm-up will be inspired by elements from qi gong, hatha yoga, and somatic dance practices.

This will lead into of a hands on sessions of assisted movement, incorporating touch—whether self-directed, with a partner, or in groups. These exercises will alternate between working with closed eyes and open eyes. We’ll explore the concept of “hands that doesn’t want” cultivating a sense of listening to the body, its movements, and the surrounding space.

The class will end in movement/dance across the floor, arriving into a final relaxation.

Drills for skills – contemporary class

The goal of my classes is to practice, find and define tools that helps us unlock the potentials of our dancing bodies.

The class is built by a series of what I call «drills for skills» – basic work that gets you warm and checks balance, mobility and coordination through practical exercises and simple floor- work in short phrases. For the exercises, in addition to my general education and experience from the field of contemporary dance, I draw on my knowledge from physiotherapists that have helped me reduce, heal and avoid injury, different martial arts (specifically; Jiu-jitsu and Wing Tsuen) that have given me a practical way to enter virtuous and complex physical material, and choreographers such as David Zambrano who taught me how to go in and out of the floor. Furthermore, I take inspiration from different types of European folk-dance and styles stemming from the African diaspora such as Chicago footwork, house and breaking.

I encourage everyone who joins the class to find a way of working that sparks joy and motivation.

Contemporary – “floor into standing/standing into floor” – all in moving sequences

In Liv’s class participants can expect a combo between floor and standing. Upside downs, handstands, falling/catching, leg work and travelling across the floor. All in phrases.

We begin with “neutralizing” the body and mind by rocking on the floor, releasing unnecessary patterns, tensions to be able to start movement from a more neutral space.

Then we visit floor phrases, move to standing and create bridge between the two.

Liv emphasizes freedom and effortless movement/flow in the dynamic.

Through economization of the body, using its weight, spirals, anatomic consciousness on what initiates the movement, and the technique behind. Changing directions and keeping in mind the room we work in and using the sensations in the movement.

Everything to open the body, get a body workout, get the pulse up, dive into different qualities and connect to the other participants and the room we move in.

Music and sound landscape will be played live by Gert Østergaard Pedersen. Gert and Liv has a many yearlong collaboration, which is felt through the connection between the movements and sound.
