Sophia Mage
The Warmth of Other Suns

This intense evening-length performance imagines three beings in a corner of the universe, thousands of years into the future. They find themselves stranded in an unknown location, their means of transportation utterly crashed and destroyed. They must continually scan the area for sustenance. Yet they have a bigger issue at hand. Their bodies and minds are undergoing an arduous transmutation from dense matter into light.

Sophia Mage (DK/US) is a dancer, choreographer, and teacher based in Copenhagen. Sophia approaches performance with a world-building mindset. She often works with a fictional sense of being and place in order to gently tilt the atmosphere towards the uncanny. Themes of rage, transcendence, abjection, euphoria, femme sensuality, and dualism permeate her work. By embracing many apparent contradictions, she oversaturates, dissolves, and re-dreams the human experience. Transformation is central to her practice and aesthetic. Her process is influenced by the meeting of intuition, improvisation, and coincidences arising from the mediums she works with. All this with an eye to immediate, broad appeal, so that the finished work appears inviting in itself, with a rich underlying intention.

After receiving a BA in political science and working for an NGO in Oakland, California, she relocated to Europe and graduated from the Danish National School for Performing Arts. Over the years, she has collaborated with choreographers, musicians, visual artists, filmmakers, and academics on projects of varying scale and ambition. She gives workshops and teaches for institutions and companies such as The Danish National School for Performing Arts, P.A.R.T.S., Danish Dance Theatre, Ballet De Lorraine, and Cullberg. Additionally, she has produced and created several works, including Vibrant Matter 2020 and Atmosphere of Decay 2023, and is currently developing The Warmth of Other Suns 2026 and Sea Swine 2027 with Sofia Stål and
Mia Milovic. In 2025, she received Wilhelm Hansen’s honorary award. She is a member of the Copenhagen-based collective Dance Cooperative.
