During this workshop, we’ll explore diverse ways of dancing and composing together in groups, engaging with the space we’re in, the music we co-create with, while relating to questions of equality. After warming up, we’ll dive into group partnering and contact improvisation exercises, followed by structured improvisations focused on communal composition. We’ll examine principles of composition between bodies, space, and sound, including their construction and potential deconstruction. Together, we’ll research what equality in collective dancing and composing might mean today – both collectively and for each of us – approaching the topic with the attentiveness and seriousness it deserves, while embracing ample playfulness.

The classes are held at Dansehallerne, Franciska Clausens Plads 27 DK-1799 Copenhagen V.

Dansehallerne has an elevator with step-free access to all floors. Accessible and gender-neutral toilets and wardrobes are available on the ground floor.

All members can participate in Dansehallerne’s training activities – a year-round program with approximately 5 days of training per week and now also workshops every other week. This is for all professional members regardless of background in dance training, and it is also possible to participate in a drop-in class.

Johanna Chemnitz studied dance at the ArtEZ University Arnhem (2000-04). She has danced and created internationally, collaborating long term with artists like Margrèt Sara Gudjónstóttir, Marie Topp and Mette Ingvartsen. Since 2005, she’s taught improvisation, composition, and dance technique across Europe – for ex. at the Bauhaus University Weimar, HFBK Hamburg, Dansehallerne Copenhagen, Den Danske Scenekunstskole.
