What happens when the energy of the club moves onto the stage? Experience an evening where the raw improvisation, sense of community, and musicality of House Dance culture meet the presence and focus of the performing arts.
The dances that have celebrated freedom in the darkness of the club step into the spotlight, revealing what they can become when time, space, and sound come together in their fullest expression. Rooted in the international, independent House Dance scene, Marie Kaae shines a light on this vibrant underground culture.
With music curated by Lynnée Denise and a judging panel of legendary status, independent club dancers are invited to take over Dansehallerne’s largest stage in an improvisational performance. Combining elements of a battle and an open call, the format offers Danish performing arts audiences a rare opportunity to experience a scene that too seldom finds its way into the spotlight.
The musical thread throughout the evening is House Music, branching into eclectic directions across African American and Afro-diasporic musical traditions, including Soul, Gospel, Disco, Jazz, Funk, and beyond.
Who can take the stage?
Anyone who feels drawn to the format is welcome to sign up. As in a battle, each participant will have one minute in the spotlight for a pre-selection, competing for a place among the ten selected dancers. From there, the chosen dancers will be given more time to develop their improvisation, guided by themes and poetic prompts.
The evening’s winner will receive a paid artistic residency together with up to four dancers of their own choosing, providing time, facilities, and support for artistic research in 2027.
This residency prize is made possible thanks to HAUT, in collaboration with Marie Kaae and co-produced with Dansehallerne, who together have created this unique evening.
Freestyle dancers with a strong sense of musical interpretation are especially encouraged to participate and are eligible for a reduced ticket price.
