Lisbeth Gruwez & Maarten Van Cauwenberghe
WASCO!

A performance for everybody from 6 years and up.

A large, white canvas is rolled out on the floor. Ten children armed with paint and brushes throw themselves into a creative and wild process of creation, and right there a gigantic work of art emerges to the sound of energetic jazz rhythms. Inspired by the legendary action artist Jackson Pollock, the children take us on a colourful and chaotic journey, at the crossroads between dance and visual art.

WASCO! is a performance that gives children space to play in a world without adults. An invitation to search for a renewed sense of freedom. A feast for the eyes and ears, where ten brilliant performers between 8 and 14 years old create a universe by dancing and painting – entirely on their own terms.

Lisbeth Gruwez (she/her) is a dancer, choreographer and co-founder of Voetvolk. She studied at the Urban Institute of Ballet and at P.A.R.T.S. and started her professional career with the company Ultima Vez. From 1999, she collaborated with Jan Fabre and was one of his ”Guerriers de la beauté”, and was featured as such in Pierre Coulibeuf’s film of the same name. She has worked with a number of other artists, such as Grace Ellen Barkey, Riina Saastamoinen, and Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui. Maarten Van Cauwenberghe (he/him) is a musician and composer. He started playing guitar at the age of 12 and after studying commercial engineering, he moved to the Jazz studio in Antwerp. In 2000, he started working with Jan Fabre. There he met dancer Lisbeth Gruwez with whom he started working closely, and they founded Voetvolk in 2007. Besides his composition work for Voetvolk, he has composed music for a number of performances and films, and he has directed various music videos. In 2016, he won the Flemish Culture Prize for Cultural Entrepreneurship.
