Emeka Ene is one of the ten dancers in Unearth and is holding this workshop on the occasion of the performance, which will take place on September 6–7 at Dansehallerne.
This workshop begins with the act of singing, what it stirs in us, how it moves us. In uncertain times, when our attention is fragmented and our bodies can feel dislocated, voice offers a grounding back to ourselves. Though immaterial, the voice shapes and animates the material body, vibrating through flesh, shifting posture, presence, and perception.
Using the looping of an album as a metaphor for our persistent desire to return, remember, and relive, we will explore singing as a practice of self-reengagement. Singing together invites both introspection and connection: an inner landscape opens even as we tune into those around us.
Through coached singing sessions and guided movement explorations, we’ll gently build toward a shared choreography of attention, empathy, and presence.
We will layer activities, parameters and time and space coordinates and build choreographies framed performatively in order to find a way back to ourselves through each other, vital in these polarizing times.
All bodies and all voices are welcome. Bring what you need to be comfortable moving and singing. Kneepads are useful but not strictly necessary. Your presence is everything.
In Unearth, Jefta van Dinther brings together ten dancers in a bold and stripped-down choreography of body and voice. In his characteristic cross-disciplinary style, which catalogues his extensive repertoire on human behaviour and its linked ecologies, van Dinther breaks down our impetus to feel anew — time and again.
The classes are held at Dansehallerne, Franciska Clausens Plads 27 DK-1799 Copenhagen V in Studio 3.
