In the course of my education, choreographer Rebecca Hilton introduced me and my classmates to the work “Locus” by Trisha Brown and asked us to create dance phrases by interpreting and borrowing the principals. I imagined myself standing in a cube with 26 directions (Rudolf Laban’s cube), where I exchanged each direction’s number for a letter, and thus positioned, I wrote my name in the space around me. With a continuous fall, but at the same time in balance by extending body parts between different points in space, the dance phrase made me turn, curve and spiral around myself.
Earlier this year, dancer and teacher Nina Wehnert directed my attention towards my organs in a Body-Mind Centering workshop. By giving in to my gut, bladder and diaphragm I pushed my weight around inside my available and three-dimensional trunk, creating complex, unpredictable and delayed movement-sequencing. Dancing by way of my contents (organs) was clearly different from my usual dancing, using my container (skeleton and muscles).
The class at Dansehallerne will engage with and elaborate on these two dance practices. We will start the class with visualizations, hands-on exercises and improvisational scores that focus on weight, collapse and movement initiation from our contents versus containers. This will be followed by dance phrases that turn, curve and spiral in relation to our outside architecture (Rudolf Laban’s cube).
The classes are held at Dansehallerne, Franciska Clausens Plads 27, DK-1799 Copenhagen V, in Studio 3.
