A Portal – A Place

During A Portal – A Place, we will work through the methodology of Open Source Forms to practice dancing as becoming in and among others. We will begin through awakening into physical and energetic presence with the self and the “room” –with all its inhabitance– through structured and imaginative provocations for movement, practices of duration, breath, form, force, and dynamics, as well as invitations into rigorous dancing and physical imagining. The work invites trust in and curiosity towards the wisdom and intellectual brilliance of the movement of the whole self as a foundation for imagination and inspiration. Classes will also include hands on work, as well as time for digestive writing. Bring a notebook! From improvisational forms we will move into group compositional scores, built on a journeying together that asks for attunement, generous witnessing, and care towards both the self and the collective.

This workshop is based upon Open Source Forms, which is deeply rooted in and fluidly expanded from Skinner Releasing Technique as conceived of by Stephanie Skura. Through the use of non-anatomical images for moving, evocative music, touch/contact, and play between energetic states, the class will inevitably lead toward unruly and surprising improvisational dances.

The classes are held at Dansehallerne, Franciska Clausens Plads 27 DK-1799 Copenhagen V in Studio 3.

LAYTON LACHMAN is an artist living in Berlin. They create performances which channel experiential physical practices into immersive, sensory complex worlds. Utilizing a diverse range of performance contexts, Layton’s choreographies are seen on stage, in galleries, museums, and in public space. These works include voice, spatialized sound, and intense physicality, that once combined are often distinguished by their surrealist, dreamlike qualities. Their work has been performed in Haus der Kunst München, Shedhalle, Das Kunstmuseum Bonn, Amant, Sophiensaele, and featured in Berlin Art Week. In addition to their performative practice, Layton is often involved in collective space/curation projects, as well as regularly teaching in Berlin and as a guest artist at universities in the USA.
