Alma Söderberg
Workshop

During the afternoon workshop we will focus on polyrhythm, syncopation and synthesis. You will learn how to jam with polyrhythmical patterns, played out with both body and voice . Further we will work with rhythmical syncopation, creating a way of perceiving our dance as a rhythmical thing, as an ever-varying division of time in terms of rhythm. Finally, synthesis has to do with working on a detail level; making slight changes in tonus, tone, speed, intensity etc in order to make change really matter and to open up both your own and eventually the audiences ability to perceive more and come closer to the dance.

Participation in the workshop requires attendance for all five days!

This workshop is in collaboration with DDSKS, where members and students gets a chance to participate and train together. This is for all professional members no matter background in dance training, and it is possible to drop in✨
International guests can also join training for free for up to 1 month.

The workshop will be divided into several parts. First, students will work on the foundation of two club styles: House Dance and UK Jazz Dance. She will share tools for deconstructing footwork elements into abstract movement language, which students can use in their personal artistic practice.

Transformation through repetition / Transformation through collaboration

Transformation through repetition / Transformation through collaboration is simultaneously a warm-up, movement investigation, and workshop. Rachel and Tim will physically guide you through their experience of working with the practice/logic Transformation through repetition and how their collaboration informs the work. The practice/logic works with the notion of a pulsating body and the multitude of experiences that can be had in a state of pulsation, where kinesthetic empathy serves as a choreographic principle, a marker of relations and connection. You can expect a warm-up that explores kinesthetic and sensory engagement as well as the centering of attention. The workshop will continue with individual and group tasks, collaboration investigations and set material, creating a room where the body´s intellect is leading the exploration and preparation for the day.

Min combines different styles into his practice, the goal is to experience the potential of the physical and mental sensitivity & power. He wants to share the experience he had through his dance career with people he meets in the studio, to find the connection between mental state and physical expression. The relation between being and doing, how we can keep learning and observing at the same time, how we can find layers for the body and mind, how we can define and redefine what dance and movement is for us.

Merel Heering
Practicing Positionality, Dance dramaturgY

Dance dramaturge Merel Heering aims to contribute to a more ethically just performing arts field through the way she practices dance dramaturgy.

For this workshop she proposes to practice positionality together and to study the way it is an inherent and crucial aspect of deepening and further developing one’s dramaturgical practice.

One way to define positionality is: “Positionality is the social and political context that creates your identity in terms of f.e. race, class, gender, sexuality, and ability status. Positionality also described how your identity influences, and potentially biases, your understanding of and outlook on the world. “ (Gender and sexuality dictionary, August 23, 2018).

Practicing Positionality is the third out of four workshops that aims to inspire artists in their practice and to contribute to a nuanced discussion on dance dramaturgy in Denmark.

The workshop series is put together by dance dramaturg Ida-Elisabeth Larsen and is realized in collaboration with DDSKS Further Education as well as the hosting venues.

The workshop is designed to learn with and from each other, as we need each other to raise our awareness around the way our specific social position, heritage, world view, privileges and lived experiences impact our vision and actions.

It impacts the people we choose to work with, the references we bring in, the way we give feedback, the vocabulary we use, what we believe to be urgent and of ‘good quality’, what we believe ‘makes sense’ and who we envision to be a work’s audience and more.

Practicing positionality also includes looking critically at our intuitions and our personal triggers. According to Merel, practicing positionality is not only urgent in itself. It is also the groundwork she believes we should be doing, in order to carry and progress the systemic change needed in our field, such as anti-racism work, fighting the gender binary and creating a more socially just professional field overall.

The workshop addresses anyone who sees themselves working within the field of dance and choreography (fx. emerging or established artists, technicians, producers, programmers etc.)

Participants are kindly asked to bring the following

  • Comfortable clothes that enables you to move around a bit and to sit on the floor.
  • Warm socks!
  • There will be refreshments during the day, but please bring your own lunch
  • Materials to make notes on or doodle /draw during the day.
  • An object or something else that for the participant resonates with the following words: Being seen. I see you. Recognizing yourself. (credit: this task is inspired by journalist and writer Clarice Cargard)
  • A book or book title / insta-post or account / podcast / youtube link or any other source that has thusfar been important in enlarging your understanding of your position in the world.

ABOUT THE WORKSHOP SERIES ON DANCE DRAMATURGY

Through 4 practice-oriented workshops, and with themes such as positionality, feminism, trans-speculative fiction, ecology and exhibition, this workshop series aims to inspire artists in their practice and to contribute to a nuanced discussion on dance dramaturgy in Denmark.

The workshop series is put together by dance dramaturg Ida-Elisabeth Larsen and is realized in collaboration with Efteruddannelsen and Dansehallerne as well as the hosting venues Aaben Dans, BoraBora and Studio Q&A.

The workshop and space is accessible to participants with physical and/or sight impairment, but unfortunately not hearing impairment.

In the Air and In the Ground

You can expect a warm and fun atmosphere where we together will be exploring new and old movements with twists and new variations. We will be flying high and moving low, with movements and qualities that incorporate floorwork, acrobatics and influences from nature and animals. Through these classes you will build strength from pushing your physical body, you will be working on awareness and control by exploring where your control ends and instinct perhaps takes over. We will also be working on a softer side where weightshift and spinal work will be put into focus. Together we will explore our bodies’ limits and try to discover what esthetics lie there. I hope to explore and share this passion with you.

Grounding and Groove

During the morningclass we will work on warming up both body and voice through different excersizes, a strong focus is on rhythmical work as well as how to connect the sound and a movement in a one-on-one manner in order to create an instrument with your body. We will work particularly with grounding and groove, finding ways to access a physicality that is both laid back and rhythmically tight. This will be done through wit the help of music and somatics.

House Dance

As a guest of the culture, it’s with much respect that I will share techniques and foundations within the Style of House Dance. The week will consist of training. We will sweat, we will work out, together! My aim is to create a brave space where we will focus on Grooves with the focus of free and personal style. Footwork and drilling, so bring your fast feet, musicality and lastly, my approach to use the floor inspired a lot by capoeira and breaking. The level will be set to push you not only technically but also individually. I promise good music and a healthy atmosphere. House Dance is a Club Style with a lot of freedom and personal style, bring yours.
