Liv Mikaela Sanz
Effortless movement in a set framework

Participants can expect a mix of dynamic floorwork with upside downs, handstands, falling, catching that proceeds to standing sequences.

A natural combination of floor and standing will occur as a result of encouraging effortless moving and flow by using weight, and aligning and directing the body in space.

By using sensory images/memories in the body, Liv focuses on breaking down and reaching a good, solid anatomical understanding both in floorwork and standing, so participants can leave with an effective awareness of functionality and economization of energy, knowing what initiates the movement, getting out into all corners of the body and where to direct it. This leads to fluidity and effortless movement, while also playing with dynamics, colours and the artistry of movement.

To prepare for floorwork we warm up the body and mind on the floor from neutral/zero point using guided floor impro. We go through all directions of the back and hips, all in a moving context/phrases using yoga/Pilates principles/awareness to achieve natural opening, placement and strengthening. The emphasis is always on fluidity, flow and quality of movement.

We then dive into floorwork.

The floorwork connects to standing sequences to create a bridge between floor and standing. In order to prepare for leg/standing work.
In standing, the focus is on what is needed to open hips, transfer weight, deep positions, elevate leg, using spirals, reaching out, expanding and opening the body.

By the end of the period Liv will combine phrases we play with through the week into a longer set structure, so participants can enjoy freedom by re-visiting the phrases.
In this set structure we play with endurance, spatial awareness, changing directions and interaction with co – participants to challenge the brain, have continuity and ending in a state of flow.

This class is accompanied by musician Gert Pedersen.

Bring the joy and pleasure of movement and nerdiness into the class.

Soma-poetic Fantasmical Anatomies Lesson based on the Feldenkrais® Method

Fantasmical Anatomies, Lessons, Symptoms and Practices  by Anne Juren

Studies on Fantasmical Anatomies is an ongoing transdisciplinary choreographic platform, which encompasses the spectrum of embodied experiences and therapeutic practices that I have created as a choreographer, dancer and Feldenkrais practitioner. By drawing on various fields of knowledge – anatomy, psychoanalysis, posthuman, feminist and queer theories, poetry and somatic practices – the research expands choreography towards disparate treatments of the body.  Using fabulations, collective imagination and telepathic touch, the morning lessons and the workshop will propose bodily practices situated at the intersection of the therapeutic and the choreographic. Fantasmical Anatomies Lessons and Practices are simultaneously a set of soma-poetic choreographies, methodologies of collective sensoria and places where the corps fantasmés are tangible.

Make sure to bring your own mat for all classes.

Open Training

A workout for sweat and contemplation.

This form of workout is the result of interaction between western dance forms and MB (muscle bone or mind body: the physical training element of Min Tanaka’s BODY WEATHER work). It is also one of the cornerstones of THE SUSTAINABLE BODY, a practice developed by Kitt Johnson.

OPEN TRAINING is…

  • Fine tunes the interaction between body and mind
  • Strengthens fitness, coordination, balance, mobility, alignment, grounding, centre and breath
  • Challenges our capacity to be present in a here and now
  • Facilitates the encounter between time, space and the human being in motion
  • Explores the significance of inner focus for the quality of movement and presence
  • Is anchored in the individual artistic practice of the coaches and constantly takethiss place in dialogue with this
  • Is also pretty sweaty!!!

OPEN TRAINING deploys…

  • Both dynamic, powerful movement across the floor and calm, meditative activity
  • Both strongly codified and free, spontaneous movement

Whacking – focus on arm technique, poses and character work

In this class we will work with different arm techniques, poses and performance. There will be a focus on improvisation, and character work through movement.

Whacking is a form of dance that originated in the gay clubs of the 1970s in California created by black and Latinx queer people. The dance has also been known as “Punking”, with some of the originators claiming that the name was a way of taking ownership of a negative term (as the term “punk” was a derogatory term for gay men in the 70s) and giving it a positive connotation.
Whacking is an extremely expressive, free and musical form of dance that is characterised by arm movements and posing with a strong emphasis on musicality and improvised performance.

Antoinette Helbing
Dynamic Body Scanning

In Antoinettes teaching she introduces a series of dynamic body scans, guiding the awareness of the participants using a diverse set of suggested movements. The aim of Antoinettes practice is to lead the participants towards a state of physical and mental availability and readiness.

This approach to movement is very much based on the Feldenkrais method, given that Antoinette is currently training to become a Feldenkrais practitioner. For those classes she will experiment with, and share ways of incorporating the method into her practice. The desire is to use the classes to foster playfulness, joy, imagination, curiosity, ease and freedom. Antoinette will use movement material that facilitates confusion, making mistakes, and instability – where participants can learn and discover new ways of being with their body in movement.

Given its basis in the Feldenkrais method, the class will mostly offer fixed movement material. Rather than being creative in terms of the choice of movement, Antoinette is interested in creativity in the execution of the movement, and using simple movement patterns to explore the process of making movements pleasurable, light and curious.

Short phrases will serve as reference movements, providing a common base on reflection through movement. In between the phrases Antoinette will insert a short Feldenkrais lesson. After the Feldenkrais practice, we will return to the short phrase to explore the material again, using the information gained from the practice.

One Nation under The Groove

From grooves to moves; in this week’s practice Anna takes the participants on a journey through different grooves, the connection with music and honest expression. We will practice different concepts and exercises that will open a door to different ways of using the body and the floor and flow from up to down – down to up. It’s important for Anna to create a safe space for everyone to take chances, try something new and challenge yourself and perhaps each other. The social aspect is as well a tool that we will be using. I aim to meet the participants on their level of experience with space for a natural and spontaneous flow throughout the classes. Be ready to sweat, work hard and play a lot!
