Somatography

Somatography is a performance taking place between the real and the imagined, thinking about and embodying propositions for a (future) public space.

Taking its title from the Greek word ‘soma’, meaning body, and ’graphie’ meaning to write, to draw, the performance invites its audiences to a shared experience of writing and re-writing the public space of Sønder Boulevard by means of dance and choreography. This will be done with the help of a map – a tool that shows a specific version of the world – by which the participant is invited to navigate through a molded reality of public space.

Somatography unfolds alongside streets, sidewalks and pocket parks in the public space of a city. It accumulates realities and fictions, narratives and abstractions, from and within different perspectives of a place. It finds itself in a continuous process of translating, imagining and re-arranging, thinking and experiencing the potentialities and possibilities, but also the improbabilities and the impossibilities of a public space. Its bodies are formed by the environment, by every action, reaction, movement, direction and gaze. These bodies appear, disappear and reappear, they detour and through these detours find and tell stories.

Tickets for Somatography are free, but with a reservation fee of DKK 40.

Note: The performance is taking place outdoors at the site of Sønder Boulevard.

The meeting point for the audience will be at Forsøgstationen, Sdr. Boulevard 81, 1720 Copenhagen V.

The performances will take place 7. + 8. + 9. + 12. June 2022. Be aware that the performance starts at different times of the day depending on which day you chose to participate. On the premiere day, the 7th of June, we invite the audience after the performance to join us at Forsøgstationen for a drink and an artist talk with the artistic team, where they will share their thoughts on Somatography and the mapping methods.

Kalliopi Siganou is a Greek-Danish dancer and choreographer based between Denmark and Croatia. Her work is shaped through explorations of performance in unconventional spaces and locations, different formats of presenting and strategies of sharing encouraging different encounters with an audience. Her latest works involve systematic experimentations around the movement of public space, patterns of connection, relation and event formation as well as explorations around the notion of social choreography, performance and performativity of different phenomena. Kalliopi graduated from the Danish National School of Performing Arts in Copenhagen, including an exchange at the Academy of Dramatic Arts in Zagreb. She has been since performing with the Croatian based performing arts collective BADco. She works nationally and internationally in collaboration with other artists, currently creating interactive performances for children and developing works in public spaces alongside touring with her latest work “milkywhale” through the platform KORA/Dansehallerne. Karin Bergman is a Swedish dancer and choreographer based in Copenagen, Denmark. Her choreographic interest is circulating around decentralization, as a way of understanding, generating and organizing movement. Her work is investigating the relationships between an individual body, a collective body and a defined space, and has been manifested in various collaborations in public space, museum spaces and unconventional theatre spaces with a decentralized quality. Karin has been collaborating with choreographer Tina Tarpgaard, performance artist Andreas Liebmann, visual artists Jules Fischer and Anna Moderato, among others. Her own choreographic work has recently been presented through Statens Museum for Kunst, Museet for Samtidskunst, Tårnby Park Performance Festival and Dansehallerne’s New Sh*t. Karin is currently engaged in three different interactive children performances touring in Denmark through Kora /Dansehallerne. She is also a part of DanceCooperative, an artist run space organized by 16 performance artists, working along intersectional and feminist practices of sharing space together.
