Astrid Sweeney
Exploring sensory limbs…

Astrid Sweeney will guide you through a warm up, working with succession within the body through spirals, shaking, assymetry and shifting relations to gravity.

The session will then transition into movement explorations inspired by Astrid’s latest collaborative work, Ontogenesis Dreams. Drawing from science fiction literature, the molting processes of insects, and queer ecologies, participants will engage in creating non-human locomotions and reimagine the sensory hierarchy of the body. Through imaginative prompts, such as envisioning the head as a tail or the feet as eyes, we will experiment with hybrid forms and explore knotting techniques to construct hybrid, interconnected “bodies.”

The classes are held at Dansehallerne, Franciska Clausens Plads 27 DK-1799 Copenhagen V in Studio 3.

Astrid Sweeney is a Danish/Irish performer and choreographer interested in interrogating movement through stasis, stimulus and isolation of individual body parts. Her recent work questions and distorts the perspective we have on the femme body through investigating forms of motion that could be considered otherly or uncanny. Her sources of inspiration include the adaptive resilience and diversity of nature, queer ecology, science fiction and somatic movement philosophies, as well as her extensive background in diverse realms of dance and movement. In 2020, she collaborated with mixed media artist Zara Joan Miller on Soft Rio, a short film featured at festivals including MUFF, LUFF, and Ann Arbor. The following year, she created Weven, a site-specific performance for Fête Permanente in Paris with Jonas Vandekerckhove. Since 2022, Astrid has been developing Ontogenesis Dreams with visual artist Weixin Quek Chong, presenting this work in Singapore, Norway, Belgium, and Denmark. Born in Copenhagen, Astrid began as a traditional Irish dancer and, in 2011, was accepted at the Rambert School of Ballet and Contemporary Dance in London. She later performed with Scottish Dance Theatre, contributing to works by choreographers such as Sharon Eyal, Fleur Darkin, Botis Seva, and Colette Sadler. Now based in Brussels, Astrid freelances as a performer, choreographer, and choreographic assistant, collaborating with artists like Iván Pérez, Tamsyn Russell, Luke Murphy, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, and Damien Jalet.
