Over the course of this five-day workshop, we will research and deconstruct narratives of authority through the genre/lens of movie Westerns. Our days will be bookended by guided meditations and will include a rigorous dance and vocal warm-up, writing and practicing open scores, and some trips of the day (durational dance sessions), which will include, but are not limited to: deep observation of trance, the slinky body flay, western character studies, live scripting and automatic journaling, line-dancing, slapstick grandiose (bargaining gestures), watching films and dueling with our phones. Through long-form improvisations and dressing the part, imaginations will be sparked; the physical will shape the imaginative and vice versa. Everyone is encouraged to bring and share their western clothes with each other. Scour the net for images and or images you already have on steel-toed boots with a hefty spur at the heel and or that you’ve all-of-a-sudden developed a real soft and slow drawl of the tongue. Movement-wise, we will toy with the tilt, developing odd walks, hip swings, and or off-kilter waiting. Songwise, we will work on proverbial ditties and or waning ballads. No previous experience is necessary, just a willfulness to play and engage.
We encourage you to continue looking after yourself & each other and arrive to practice with a valid corona pass.
