This is a commercial dance workshop relying on contemporary and internettic social dance, no wave and punk rock sensibilities, and the notion of a Caribbean “gothic”, in order to choreograph horror in the live dance context. Against a backdrop of conviviality and celebration culture, this workshop offers a glimpse into the practices of experimental choreographer and movement director Marikiscrycrycry.
The workshop will emphasise a learning-by-doing structure, understanding choreography from the inside and through the practise of doing. Participants will learn repertory phrases, working with footwork, state-building, tableau-making, fast dancing, reckless abandon and the margins of control.
Participants will sweat. Please bring trainers that you are comfortable dancing in. This is a commercial dance class, so emphasis will be on the brute exchange of physical ideas, externalisation and a promise of ”the Sheen”.
