Rachel Tess
‘The Last’ Morning Training

Since 2018, choreographer and dancer Rachel Tess has created three performances stemming from the theme “the last dance you will ever do.” Through Dansehallerne’s morning training, she extends this concept to you.

Beginning with a thorough warm-up, we will explore a landscape of physicalities, qualities, and rhythms. Moving together, we will attend to our breath, our place in space, our bodies, and the bodies of others through light references to somatics, shaking, stretching, and strengthening. As time passes, the class will widen and deepen to include guided improvisations grounded in a layered approach to the movement introduced in the warm-up.

You will conclude by creating your own “last dance”—a dance guided by your personal interests. By placing this fictional framework on your morning training, we will explore urgency and what is at stake when we take the floor as dancers each morning.

The classes are held at Dansehallerne, Franciska Clausens Plads 27 DK-1799 Copenhagen V in Studio 3.

Getting there
Studio 3 is located on the ground floor with step-free access from the main entrance.
Continue straight on towards the changing rooms next to the Foyer. Studio 3 is located at the bottom right corner.

Dansehallerne has an elevator with step-free access to all floors. Accessible and gender-neutral toilets and wardrobes are available on the ground floor.

We kindly ask you to arrive 15 minutes prior to class in time for check-in with the QR code on your ticket.

All members can participate in Dansehallerne’s training activities – a year-round program with approximately 5 days of training per week and now also workshops every other week. This is for all professional members regardless of background in dance training, and it is also possible to participate in a drop-in class.

International guests can participate in training for free for up to 1 month. If you have comments or good tips for the training program, you can always send an email to the curators.

In this improvisation-based class, Sarah Aviaja Hammeken bridges the physical and emotional realms. Rooted in fluidity and connection, this practice invites you to explore how emotions travel through the body, fostering profound connections both within yourself and with others. Through guided improvisation, participants delve into the physicality of emotions, transforming intangible feelings into tangible expressions. In this class we will primarily focus on the exploration of a set movement phrases. We will do a full warm up, followed by a movement sequence (a new sequence taught in each class).

Aside from simply learning the sequence, dancers are encouraged to set an intention for what they hope to explore and achieve within it qualitatively and find ways to make the phrase make sense for their bodies and intention for that day’s exploration.

The aim is not to perform for one other, but to use one’s individual facility, strengths and qualities to execute the phrase in a clear and deliberate way, navigating the movements in line with the intention the dancer has set for themselves.

The class will take a practitioner trajectory towards a technical dance practice. It’s become a goal of his not to work with participants through documented contemporary movement techniques. Instead to try and encourage improvisation through and by finding your own niche of moving.

With warmups and tasks which consist of using words to describe what is being targeted. An example would be liquid movement, rotating wrists, elbows, and shoulders. ‘What happens with the rest of the body that follow these isolations, make up your own rhythm and dynamics in the improvised sequence.

In this class you will be encouraged to research your own ways of movement, within a co-authorship of structured scores. Personal movement research, away from documented techniques where unison work is part of the practice. Each day we will ‘perform’ structures and tasks and take note on our own development.

Please bring comfortable clothes for virtuosic dance, notebook, and optionally: a favorite dance track.

Only as a member, you can take part in Dansehallerne’s training activities – a year-round program with approximately 5 days of training per week. International guests can also join training for free for up to 1 month.

This is for all professional members no matter background in dance training, and we recommend joining both for drop in or all days✨
