TIZIANAS DANCE ANECDOTES

When I learnt to walk I would only walk around on tiptoe. No amount of encouragement could make me put my heels down. I still have that habit. My parents thought that that was a sign that I should start ballet.

At the age of six I performed in my first ballet. I danced the role of a monkey.
When all the other animal characters were given animal masks I stood in line eagerly awaiting mine. When the director got to me she smiled and said “you don’t need a mask” and that was that, I performed bare faced amongst all the masks.
I was horrified.

When I was 10 years old, I performed in the musical Bugsy Malone. During a performance my headband fell and sat around my eyes and my tube top landed up around my waist. I pretended all was as it should be and continued like this right through to the end. After the show the director told me she thought I had what it took to be a dancer.

From an early age until I was 12 years old we would have big Italian lunches with family and friends every Sunday. It was at these gatherings, that I would clown around and improvise a dance. It became a regular part of the teatime entertainment, and even at weddings and special occasions. I still blush when they talk about it!

In college I had a ballet teacher who taught class with a glass of vodka in one hand and a lit cigarette in the other. She would stand beside us and hold the burning cigarette under our legs saying higher, higher. It sounds crazy but we got our legs up!
